Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work
Ever made a New Year’s Resolution you did not keep? If your answer is “no” – you may be busy achieving excellence. If the answer is “yes”, then there is still hope for you!
Most people break their ambitious New Year’s resolutions. Why? For a number of reasons, but mostly because there is a lack of commitment, a lack of willpower and like Nike says, no motivation to “Just Do It.”
Most smokers want to quit, but it’s not as simple as just making a New Year’s resolution and then you’re half way there – you need to really, really want to quit smoking. Or lose weight, or start your own company, or whatever it is that you’ve got in your sights. You have understand the sacrifices involved, what you have to give up. Losing weight you will need to give up quite a few things. Quitting smoking should seem easy – you only have to quit one thing (and make sure you don’t replace it with donuts). But there is obviously more to it than that – a firm commitment. Until you are ready to go ALL IN, don’t bother – you’ll just be disappointed.
Aristotle’s quote about excellence is a good guide to make your New Year’s resolutions kick in – because it’s not really about setting goals, it’s about continuously striving towards excellence. It’s not an act, it’s a habit. So you may want to reformulate your New Year’s resolutions into something everlasting. Instead of “quitting smoking”, which is an act – say you are going to live an overall healthy lifestyle – for the rest of your life, not just for this year. Quitting smoking will then just be one of the steps. It becomes a system, a system for achieving excellence. A habit.
Good luck creating awesome habits!
